Toho Studios was actually prepared to retire the Godzilla franchise in 2004 following its release of Godzilla: Final Wars. And after years—12, to be exact—it began to look like Toho was going to make good on that retirement promise. However, the 2014 Hollywood-produced Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards seemed to change Toho’s mind. Spurred on by the American remake’s success, the Japanese production company responded two years later with Shin Gojira, which was an instant hit with Japanese critics and audiences alike.
There’s a distinctly different tone to the 2014 film when compared to previous American attempts at adaptation, and a clear effort on Edwards’ part to honor Honda’s original vision as much as possible. With a Godzilla sequel already slated for 2018, it seems that there is no end in sight for the monster franchise.
